2016 IRS Tax filing deadlines

Delia Law San Diego Tax lawyer2016 IRS tax  filing season is expected to run much smoother than previous years.  The IRS has made some due date changes for business tax returns that are expected to ease up burdens on tax preparers and make returns due in a more logical order.  Below are the most important 2017 tax deadlines for tax year 2016:

IRS Tax filing Deadlines for Individual Returns (1040, 1040-EZ, 1040A, 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ):

  • Tax return and request for extension deadline – April 18, 2017
  • Tax return extension deadline – October 16, 2017
  • For sole proprietorship or self-employed individuals, quarterly payments are due the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, and 9th months of your tax year, as well as on the 15th day of the 1st month after your tax year ends (Form 1040-ES) – April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15, 2018
  • 2016 amended tax return deadline (Form 1040X).  There is a deadline of three years from the original due date to claim any tax refund – April 15, 2020

IRS Tax filing deadlines Business Returns:

  • S Corporation tax return and request for extension deadline (Form 1120S) – March 15, 2017
  • S Corporation extension deadline – September 15, 2017
  • Partnership tax return and request for extension deadline (Form 1065) – March 15, 2017
  • Partnership extension deadline – September 15, 2017
  • Schedule K-1 (Form 1065) due to owners – March 15, 2017
  • C Corporation tax return and request for extension deadline (Form 1120) – April 15, 2017
  • C Corporation extension deadline – October 16, 2017
  • Quarterly payments are due in equal installments on the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the corporation’s tax year – April 15, June 15, September 15, December 15, 2017

**These dates reflect businesses on a calendar year.

IRS Tax filing deadlines for Trust and Estate income tax returns (Form 1041):

  • Trust tax return and request for extension deadline – April 17, 2017
  • Trust tax return extension deadline – October 2, 2017

IRS Tax filing deadlines for Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts or FBAR (FinCen Form 114)

What is the tax filing deadline for foreign bank accounts?
  • FBAR and request for extension deadline – April 15, 2017
  • FBAR extension deadline – October 15, 2017(note: this is the first time ever that extensions are available for FBARs).
  • FBARs do not have a next-business-day rule if the deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday.

Be sure to make timely filings and estimated tax payments or you may be in for a surprise.  You definitely do not want to become a non-filer as there are many IRS problems that will result.  Many taxpayers get into IRS trouble when they fail to stay in compliance resulting in quite sizeable amounts of tax debt.  If resolution is needed, there are several options to consider, including a payment plan or an offer in compromise.
